Thailand Sets Date for General Election

(MENAFN) Thailand's Election Council greenlit a nationwide vote for Feb. 8, 2026 on Monday, paving the way for fresh parliamentary representation in the House of Representatives.

Prospective MP candidates can submit applications between Dec. 27-31, a nation's public broadcaster reported. Party-list and prime ministerial candidate registration opens Dec. 28-31.

Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn dissolved parliament Friday following a formal appeal from Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

The monarch issued a royal decree terminating the House of Representatives after Anutin officially petitioned for expedited elections within a 45 to 60-day window.

Thailand's existing legislative body emerged from the May 2023 general election.

The push toward accelerated polling follows sustained frontier hostilities with Cambodia that have claimed dozens of lives over recent months.
